Every deer camp has a story about the buck that showed up when nobody expected him. Maybe it was 11:45 a.m., when everyone else was heading in for lunch. Maybe it was 1:30 in the afternoon, just as a hunter started questioning whether to call it a day. Those lunchtime bucks make some of the best hunting stories. And as the whitetail rut intensifies across much of the country, there's good reason to believe the middle of the day deserves more attention.
While deer are generally most active around dawn and dusk, breeding season can change the equation as bucks increase their movements in search of receptive does. For hunters who can commit to an all-day sit, that increased daytime movement may create opportunities they would otherwise miss.
Staying in the stand is only part of the strategy. Understanding where bucks are likely to travel and setting up accordingly can help hunters take advantage of additional movement opportunities.
- Focus on doe activity. As bucks search for receptive does, areas connecting doe bedding locations, feeding areas and travel corridors can become increasingly important.
- Pay attention to changing conditions. Wind direction, weather and local hunting pressure can influence deer movement and should remain part of stand-selection decisions.
- Minimize unnecessary disturbance. An all-day sit reduces the need to enter and exit hunting areas during potentially productive hours.
- Consider strategic scent placement. Tink's #69 Doe-In-Rut and Tink's Peak30 Premium Doe Estrus provide options for hunters looking to introduce doe estrus scent near established travel routes, scrapes or other appropriate hunting setups. Using scent wicks, draggers or strategically positioned dispensers allows hunters to incorporate scent into their strategy while remaining attentive to wind direction and deer movement.
"Everybody loves an early-morning hunt, but some of the best rut stories can happen in the middle of the day," said Teri Quinn, Director of Marketing at Tink's. "When bucks are actively searching for does, the opportunity doesn't necessarily end when the morning movement slows down. Being prepared and staying patient can make all the difference."
The rut can create some of the most unpredictable and exciting deer movement of the season. A mature buck may appear along a familiar trail, pass through a travel corridor or cross an opening at a time when activity would otherwise be minimal. And sometimes, the difference between telling a story about the buck you saw and the buck you missed is simply being there when he walks through.
This November, think twice before climbing down for lunch. And be ready with Tink's!
