Join us for the next Herd & Hunter: Bovine TB Connections meeting Thursday, Oct. 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. To ensure you have the latest information on bovine tuberculosis in Michigan, the meeting will include updates from the following speakers:
- Dr. Mike VanderKlok, Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development: updates on the status of bovine TB-infected cattle herds.
- Pat Ryan, U.S. Department of Agriculture-Wildlife Services: deer removal efforts around infected herds.
- Emily Sewell, Michigan Department of Natural Resources: 2026 deer season updates and reminders.
In addition to these updates, the meeting will feature a presentation from Dr. Justine O'Malley, MDARD's Emergency Management Program manager and One Health coordinator, on New World screwworm, a devasting pest that can infest livestock, wildlife and people. Even though this pest was originally eradicated in the United States in the 1960s, NWS has been working its way northward from Central America, and earlier this year, it was detected in domestic animals in Texas and New Mexico. While the pest burrows into living tissue and creates health complications for its hosts, this condition is highly treatable, especially when caught early. Learn more about NWS, the current situation in the United States, and how you can help to fight this pest.
