Want to do something a bit different this Labor Day weekend? Consider connecting up close with one of Michigan's oldest and longest-living species known as "living fossils" and "dinosaur fish" — the legendary lake sturgeon.
Visit the Black River sturgeon hatchery northwest of Onaway in Cheboygan County for free tours 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5. You'll learn about sturgeon and how the hatchery supports their conservation and recovery.
Following the tours, visitors are invited to help release some of the 3- to 4-month-old, hatchery-reared sturgeon into Black River and Mullet Lake. Learn more about this Labor Day weekend event.
