August roadside surveys indicate successful early broods and recent nesting success.
The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation (ODWC) has conducted annual roadside quail surveys every August and October since 1990 to index annual population fluctuations. The number of quail observed is reported to measure quail abundance and reproductive success.
The August 2026 survey shows statewide quail numbers remain strong and above both the 10-year and long-term averages.
Oklahoma's quail season opens Nov. 14 and closes Feb. 15, 2027. The daily bag limit remains 10 quail. Nonresidents hunting on Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) must purchase a Game Bird Permit and check in and out of the WMA at GoOutdoorsOklahoma.com.
