Hunter Ed Field Day for Online Students Offered in Glendive and Lame Deer

MILES CITY – A free Hunter Education field day for online students will be held in both Glendive and Lame Deer in September. The Glendive field day will be Friday, Sept. 18 from 1-3 p.m. at Dawson Community College's Ullman Center. The Lame Deer field day will be Saturday, Sept. 19 from 10 a.m.-noon at Morning Star Baptist Church in Lame Deer.

Students ages 12-17 have the option to take either the in-person, instructor-led Hunter Education course, or they can the online Hunter Education course, but they must also take an in-person field day for online students.

Upon completing the online Hunter Ed course, students must print out the field day qualifier certificate and bring it to the field day.

Field day participants will be required to demonstrate proficiency in the following areas:

  • Four main rules of firearm safety
  • P.R.O.V.E.
  • Key points about landowner relations and hunting ethics
  • Selecting a firearm/ammo
  • Safe firearm handling, including trail caries, obstacle crossings, loading/unloading firearms from vehicles, handing off firearms
  • Basic animal identification
  • Shoot/don't shoot scenarios
  • Zones of fire
  • Shooting positions

Instructors will closely evaluate students, and students will not be able to hunt until passing a field day.
