See 3 Native Fish Species at New DWR Event

The San Rafael Swell is known for its rugged beauty and untamed desert environment. It is also home to some of Utah's unique native fish species, and the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources will be hosting a new event to allow the public to see them up close.

The free viewing event will be held on Saturday, June 27 from 10 a.m. to noon on the banks of the San Rafael River at the historic San Rafael Swinging Bridge. The event will allow participants a chance to see three native fish species in the area, often referred to as "the three species:"

  • Bluehead sucker
  • Flannelmouth sucker
  • Roundtail chub

"This will be a unique opportunity for people to connect with fish that not a lot of people know about," DWR Southeastern Region Outreach Manager Brandon Behling said. "These fish have found a way to live in one of Utah's most rugged, yet beautiful locations."

During the event, biologists will explain how to identify each species, how the fish have adapted to survive in a harsh desert environment and talk about the conservation efforts taking place to restore these native fish populations.

Participants should wear clothing suitable for a hot, desert environment, comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water.

While the event is free, it is limited to 40 people and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Register in advance on Eventbrite to save your spot for the event.
