Safari Club International (SCI) announced today the appointment of Karen Mehall-Phillips as Vice President Publications, overseeing all SCI and affiliated publications.
Mehall-Phillips brings more than 30 years of proven leadership in communications, publishing, and strategic media management, with an extensive background in hunting, conservation, and advocacy. In this new role, she will provide oversight and consultation for all publications and will develop short- and long-term growth strategies to strengthen reach, relevance, and financial performance.
As Vice President Publications, Mehall-Phillips will oversee concept development, editorial direction, production, printing, digital publishing, and overall profitability of all SCI publications and websites. Her responsibilities include evaluating resource needs, managing project costs, pricing, timelines, and performance metrics, and ensuring data-driven decision-making across all platforms.
Mehall-Phillips will also lead editorial planning, assign subject areas, and support editors in cultivating strong relationships with authors, contributors, and agents. She will also maintain close collaboration across departments to improve workflows, enhance communication, and align publishing initiatives with organizational priorities.
"Karen's experience, leadership, and deep understanding of hunting and conservation media make her uniquely qualified to guide our publishing portfolio into its next chapter," said W. Laird Hamberlin, CEO of SCI. "Her vision and proven results will ensure our publications continue to inform, inspire, and advocate for hunters and conservationists worldwide."
Mehall-Phillips is an avid hunter and is always in the pursuit of her next hunting adventure. She resides in the Texas Hill Country with her husband Phil Phillips who is well known in the hunting world in his own regard. When she is not in the field or stopping the presses, she can be found playing the accordion and looks forward to joining the SCI staff.
Mehall-Phillips previously served in senior editorial and communications leadership roles with national organizations, earning widespread recognition for launching and managing award-winning publications, and building influential partnerships across the hunting, conservation, and outdoor industries.
