MISSOULA, Mont. – The summer 2018 issue of Backcountry Journal, our largest yet at 72 pages, will be arriving in Backcountry Hunters & Anglers members’ mailboxes shortly. Featuring a report from BHA’s North American Rendezvous as well as tales of fishing and camping, a public lands road trip and even a quest for buried treasure, this issue includes nine pages of chapter updates from BHA members all over the continent. Here are some highlights from the new issue:

Riches Under Water: While on fishing trip in New Mexico, author Matt Martens encounters a man in search of Fenn’s Treasure, a chest containing millions allegedly buried somewhere in the Rockies by the eccentric and wealthy art dealer Forrest Fenn. Martens goes on to ponder the clues and the meaning of fortune as he fishes the Rio Grande Gorge.

A Grateful View from Downstream: In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, author Karl Malcom recognizes biologist John Craighead, who in 1957 wrote a letter recounting a five-day raft trip down the Middle Fork of the Flathead River. This letter, many believe, was an early spark for the Wild and Scenic Rivers System we know today.

Sawtooth: Craving secluded mountains dotted with alpine lakes, author Allen Crater and his friend Max Boyd made the trip of a lifetime into Idaho’s Sawtooth Mountains. The two traverse steep switchbacks in the rugged range and ultimately find what they are looking for – feisty brook trout – in the high mountain lakes.

Floating Soul River: BHA intern Maddie Vincent looks at the impact of a Portland-based nonprofit, Soul River Runs Deep, on the lives of veterans and inner-city youth. Last year, BHA Legacy Partner and Alaska chapter board member Barry Whitehill led a Soul River group through Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to demonstrate the incredible impact of the refuge on all who visit it.

American Public Lands Road Trip: Across five weeks and more than 8,000 miles, author Mike Adams and his girlfriend travel cross country from and back to New Jersey, with stops ranging from the North Dakota Badlands to the Appalachian Mountains, often following the same routes of explorers Meriwether Lewis and Jedediah Smith.
