QDMA Teams Up with Louisville Deer & Turkey Expo

PEWAUKEE, Wis. — The Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA) has signed on as a sponsor of the Louisville Deer & Turkey Expo in advance of the three-day event Jan. 27-29. This marks the second consecutive year of partnership between the two organizations, which share core values in the preservation and protection of whitetail deer, wildlife habitats and hunting heritage.

The annual Louisville Deer & Turkey Expo, the state's premier consumer expo for hunting and outdoor enthusiasts presented by Field & Stream and Outdoor Life magazines, returns for three days of all things deer and turkey hunting Jan. 27-29 at the Kentucky State Fairgrounds.

"The 2017 Louisville Deer & Turkey Expo is a perfect fit for The Quality Deer Management Association," said Steve Levi, director of corporate relations, QDMA. "As the leading whitetail organization dedicated to conserving North America's favorite game animal, QDMA recognizes the tremendous value that the expo delivers. Our mission is critical and the Deer & Turkey Expo provides us with a highly targeted environment and platform to deliver our message."

Last year, 56 percent of attendees drove more than 50 miles to attend the Louisville Deer & Turkey Expo, and 80 percent of those said they had done some type of habitat management project such as planting trees, grasses and food plots; building bedding areas; and creating water features.

"In 2016, the average Louisville attendee said they accessed or owned an average private property size of 156 acres," said Jake Steingraeber, executive director of the Deer & Turkey Expos. "Many people are learning that you don't even need that much property to attract quality whitetails."

"The QDMA aligns so well with our mission to arm our attendees with information to make them successful," continued Steingraeber. "We encourage current members to renew and potential members to visit the QDMA booth for a special sign-up offer at this year's Louisville Deer & Turkey Expo."

Hundreds of hunting exhibitors and outfitter booths will be on-site at the event to showcase the latest in hunting and archery equipment, accessories, clothing and more. Additionally, current and future QDMA members will find some of the many seminars specifically helpful in managing their property no matter the size. Some of the habitat-focused seminars include:
  • Scott Bestul's seminar "Big Whitetails on Small Tracts" addresses how the whitetail habitat in much of the country is fragmented into small properties where management is a huge challenge. He will give attendees tips on maximizing these types of properties.
  • Kevin Boyer will cover his large and small food plot set-ups, as well as how to channel deer traffic in his seminar titled "Creating Edges and How Deer Use Them."
  • Dr. Claude Graeff addresses how to create sanctuaries, food sources, thermal cover and screening in his seminar titled "Enhancing Deer/Turkey Habitat: Trees, Shrubs & Grasses."
  • Dave Klein, an agronomist by trade, focuses on soil preparation, moisture retention, fertilization, equipment set-up, seeding and proper selection of forage crops in his seminar, "Soil Building Systems For Food Plots."

The QDMA is making efforts to encourage its members in the region to add the Louisville Deer & Turkey Expo to their schedule.
