Union Grove Wins Open Division Scholastic Action Shooting Program National Rifle Title

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Union Grove Pistol Team from Wisconsin took first and second in the Open Division competition at the Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) National Team Championships in Ohio.

First place, and the national title, went to the Union Grove squad of Aiden Belongia (Union Grove), Nikolas Hufen (Racine), Max Heberling (Waterford) and Aimee Spiering (Union Grove) who combined for a total time of 211.33 seconds. Belongia led with a time of 49.19, followed by Hufen with 51.72, Heberling with 53.32 and Spiering with 57.10.

Union Grove's second place team finished with 216.65 and were led by Carson Werth with 47.53, followed by Clay Kowalczyk with 51.64, Kyle Hinkley with 57.79 and Emily Rasmussen of with 59.69. All four squad members are from Union Grove.

With a final time of 225.55 seconds, third place went to Iowa's Steel Shooters of Traer. Clayton Sienkneht led the squad with 48.91, followed by Brian Stewart of Traer with 51.52, Taneer Calderwood with 57.48 and Matt Whannel with 67.64. All four shooters are from Traer.

Held July 9-16 at the Cardinal Shooting Center in Marengo, Ohio, 320-plus athletes representing 17 states put over 55,000 rounds down range during eight days of competition in the sport of Speed Shooting. The format of the match has shooters facing four stages, each with five steel plates. Racing against an electronic timer, each stage is designed to test a shooter's speed and accuracy.

The Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) is a youth development program in which adult coaches and other volunteers use the shooting sport of Speed Shooting to teach and to demonstrate sportsmanship, responsibility, honesty, ethics, integrity, teamwork, and other positive life skills.

Nationally, there are over 1,300 students and more than 400 coaches from 31 states participating in the Scholastic Action Shooting Program. The Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation, Inc. (SSSF), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is the National Governing Body for the Scholastic Action Shooting Program.
