DENVER – Last week's episode of
MidwayUSA's Gun Stories, showcased the evolution of ignition systems in firearms. This week, actor, shooting enthusiast and TV host Joe Mantegna will continue detailing these explosive mechanisms, giving viewers an inside look into two historic systems – flintlock and percussion – and how they helped shape today's firearms. Tune in to MidwayUSA's Gun Stories airing on Wednesday, September 16 at 11 p.m. ET on Outdoor Channel.
When the flintlock ignition system came to be, firearms would change forever. The popularity of the ignition system brought it to the frontlines in battle. It was cheaper to produce and far more efficient than previous designs. The system was used for years, but there were still major downsides to its design. It struggled to remain functional amidst inclement weather. Or, in Reverend Alexander Forsyth's case, the flintlock system took too long to light, which he thought prevented him from effectively harvesting ducks. Forsyth's frustrations lead to a new system in the 1840s that would better withstand the elements and fire in a timely manner – the percussion system.
Tune in to this week's episode to follow along with Mantegna as he continues to detail the history of ignition systems leading up to Forsyth's invention and today's firearms.
