– the Sandhill Crane – on Thursday, August 20 at 8 p.m. ET/PT
DENVER– Steven Rinella, host of Sportsman Channel's MeatEater , has "Ribeye of the Sky" - or Sandhill Cranes as they are better known - on his mind and he's headed to the Staked Plains of Texas to find them. Along with good friends and biologists, he hopes to take aim at the birds to fill the coveted legal limit. Rinella's goal is to bring down enough waterfowl for a Sandhill cookout. But, without a little more practice, he may be out of luck and unable to take his first bite into the bird. Tune in to MeatEater, Thursday, August 20 at 8 p.m. ET/PT exclusively on Sportsman Channel.
After watching a number of cranes fly through the sky out of shotgun range, Rinella and his crew finally get their chance. A flock approaches and the men prepare to take aim, but they struggle and are left empty-handed. Their first experience is unsuccessful, but they have high hopes for the next day's hunt.
As the next morning progresses, dense fog rolls in. Eventually, luck lends a hand as skies clear and shots are fired. The men are able to bring in a banded Sandhill crane – meaning it is tracked for conservation efforts and must be reported to a bird tracking hotline. Rinella's team reports the bird's information, and because the bird has been tracked, they are able to discover the history of their harvest.
After the banded Sandhill crane is accounted for, the men hope to add to the day's bird count to have enough meat for a crane cookout.
