DENVER – How could a single gun supersede the need for more soldiers? Actor, shooting enthusiast and host Joe Mantegna, presents the game changing Gatling gun and its quest to end wars on this week's episode of MidwayUSA's Gun Stories, airing Wednesday, July 22 at 11 p.m. ET on Outdoor Channel.

Post-Civil War, America's military needed a gun with the power to displace the efforts of several soldiers, reducing the number of casualties on the battlefield. In 1861, Richard Gatling sought to invent a piece of weaponry that would potentially fill this gap and change the face of warfare with what is known as the Gatling gun. But what made Gatling's invention different from others of his time?

The Gatling gun was the first patented rotating barrel gun to harness a gravity feeding system. This meant it could fire multiple rounds – up to 400 in this case – while a single soldier cranked the handle. The cannon-like firearm bolstered efficiency and could be placed on different modes of transportation, creating a kind of mobility during wartime that soldiers had never experienced before. The mobility, firepower and ability to decrease the need for more soldiers captured the attention of government leaders, as well as the public, and catapulted the gun to the top of the list for the United States military and abroad.
