Front and center on the cover of GUNS Magazine's June issue is Ambush Firearm's .300 Blackout. John Connor tests the limits of this "big-boar" MSR's capabilities during a windy range day.
"When you've taken time off work, laid out hefty bucks for a pig-busting trip, driven 382 miles, and have one shot to git 'er done — you shoot in the weather you're dealt. It ain't always sunny, still and clear," Connor writes. "On the range, I took note of the berm and shot between Godzilla-gusts… the Ambush .300 worked great. The rifle handled, balanced, poked and pointed very well and I can't say enough about the Geissele trigger — all the parts translated from shop to field."
In "Optics, Tips & Tricks" contributing editor John Barsness shares some of his no-fail wisdoms on scopes, lens cleansers, glassing and more for the optimal precision-shooting results.
"One item many hunters neglect before focusing their scope, however, is cleaning the lenses," writes Barsness. "There are many misconceptions about cleaning optical lenses, perhaps from the use of older, softer lens coatings. Today's coatings are much harder and can take quite a bit of abuse, but ideally we shouldn't rub dry lenses."
In the Shooter's Rx column, Will Dabbs puts the Battle Rifle Company's BR4 Spartan through a grueling 10,000-round test to prove the importance of quality engineering. Meanwhile, a few other June features include: Mike "Duke" Venturino's historical account of the .38 and .44 WCF, two of Winchester's most popular Old West cartridges, Mark Hampton's review of the Kimber Adirondack after a rainy caribou hunt in Newfoundland and Pat Covert's guide to knife sharpeners.
