Yampa River State Park's Annual "Ski and Skate"

HAYDEN, Colo. - Yampa River State Park's snow-covered woods and an ice skating pond beckon at the annual "Ski and Skate" event on Jan. 15, 2011, starting at 1 p.m. and continuing throughout the day until 9 p.m. with activities for children, adults and families. Glide on cross-country skis on the nature trail or ice skate on the carefully prepared pond. The staff at Yampa River also created a small sledding hill so parents can give young children a short and safe thrill. Warm up with free hot chocolate, hot dogs and s'mores around the campfire.

The snow on the 1.25-mile nature trail has been groomed for smooth skiing or snowshoeing and, at sunset, luminaries will light the route. A variety of birds, including eagles, owls and finches, as well as other wildlife can be seen from the trail. There's also a chance to view a full moon as skiers glide in and out of the trees.

Snow was removed from the iced-over fishing pond which is large enough to handle 20 to 40 skaters. This is a great place to practice your turns and spins or teach youngsters to ice skate.

Remember to bundle up warmly to enjoy winter outdoor recreation. The park's visitor center will be open, where there will be a sale on books, shirts and other items. Juice and soft drinks will be available for purchase at the vending machines in the camper services building.
