SEDRO-WOOLLEY, Wash. - Craig Underdown of Temecula, Calif. won the Limited-10 division title at the U.S. Practical Shooting Association's (USPSA) Area 2 Regional Handgun Championship this past weekend at the Rio Salado Sportsman's Club in Mesa, Ariz.
Underdown finished with a final score of 1100.1911 to outpace his nearest competitor, second place shooter John Koppi of Rogers, Minn., by 21.1948 points. Koppi finished with a score of 1078.9963.
Taking third, and claiming the Senior Limited-10 title, was Canadian top gun Randy Fisher of Westminster, British Columbia who finished with 1056.1348 points. Rounding out the top five, Russ Shaver of Mission Viejo, Calif. took fourth with 1021.2317 while Fisher's fellow Canadian Clint Milburn of Surrey, British Columbia finished the match with 1016.9197 to claim fifth place.
The USPSA Area 2 Championship drew more than 370 top competition shooters. Area 2 is the Southwest region within USPSA, one of the eight shooting regions in the country, and is made up of Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii and New Mexico but shooters from around the country attended.
The run-and-gun sport of practical shooting was formally established in 1976 but traces its roots back to the 1950's and the quick draw "leather slap" competitions that grew out of America's love affair with the TV westerns of that era.
Today the sport represents the upper echelon of the shooting sports with many of its top shooters actively training law enforcement and military units on shooting techniques and equipment developed in competition.
