A Very Special "Hunt of a Lifetime" with Wired Outdoors on Sportsman Channel

New Berlin, Wis- Fulfilling dreams is standard on any show on Sportsman Channel, the leader in outdoor TV for the American Sportsman, but Wired Outdoors has a very special episode airing next week with Pennsylvania native, Douglas Fickel. Watch Fickel's dream hunt for a bull moose on Wired Outdoors: Monday, November 8 at 2pm and Friday, November 12 at 6:30 pm EST exclusively on Sportsman Channel.

Douglas was diagnosed with a rare disease at a young age called Ataxia-Telangiectasia or AT. Recently, he was also diagnosed with Leukemia. The combination of diseases means Douglas has been in the hospital for 100-plus days, has had multiple transfusions and takes chemotherapy 365 days year. According to Fickel's family, only 500 people in the world have this disease.

But all he really wanted was to go hunting. So with the help of Wired Outdoors' annual "Camo Cares" fundraising event, Douglas' dream came true.

"This is huge for him. It makes him smile. It gives him something to look forward to," said Douglas' mom, Pam. "It warms my heart beyond belief. And hunting is in his blood."

Douglas's father, Doug, agrees, "This has been a dream come true for him. He hasn't been able to focus on anything else. The topic of every discussion - with friends and family - is this moose hunt."

So the film crew and the Fickel's headed to Maine from Carlisle, Penn. armed with Douglas' chemo treatments for the trip and a "big transfusion" a few days before. They staked out the area where moose are known to roam....and waited. The first day didn't bring much of anything, but Douglas didn't care. "He was just having fun hanging out with the guys," Doug said to the camera.

The second day the crew saw a cow walk across a farmer's field in the early morning light. "We knew this was going to be a good day once we saw that cow," said host Jason Say. And sure enough, a bull moose strutted into the field. "All we had to do was figure out how to call him in close enough for Douglas," Jason whispered into the camera. After some cow calling and scraping the bush nearby, the bull walked in for a closer look - and that's when Douglas pulled the trigger! The moose is a beauty with a 36 inch spread.

"That was awesome! That was awesome!" Douglas screamed as he threw his hands up in victory.

"For parents, if your child wants to do something and if there's anyway you can do it - maybe by reaching out and asking for help - you must. Don't think that they can't do something," Pam shared.
