First Peoples Buffalo Jump and Tower Rock State Parks Hosting Programs in May

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is hosting several educational programs and events at Tower Rock and First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Parks in May.

First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park is three miles north of Ulm, and Tower Rock State Park is about 8 miles south of Cascade. Montana residents who pay the $9 state parks fee with their annual vehicle registration have no daily entrance fees to state parks. Nonresident vehicles are required to purchase a park entry pass for entry into the park.

Tuesday May 13 – Weed pull at First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park - Join park staff for a land improvement event from 6-7 p.m. to help remove noxious weeds that threaten the prairie landscape within the park. Gloves and water will be provided for volunteers, or bring your own, and wear closed-toe boots along with long pants and shirts. Call 406-866-2217 or email firstpeoplesbuffalojump@mt.gov to register.

Saturday May 17 – All About Snakes at First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park - If you want to learn how to navigate the trails during snake season and keep your family safe while hiking, or if you just want to learn more about the fascinating reptiles found in the park, join Dan “The Snake Man” Waitt at 1 p.m. for this informative program. This educational event will take place indoors in the classroom with a capacity of 50 visitors, and seating is on a first-come, first served basis. It does not include a hike but is a great way to learn about snake behavior, activity, and human safety.

Saturdays beginning May 24 – Ranger-led Jump Talks - Each Saturday, learn how the First Peoples drove bison over the cliffs in the park with weekly Jump Talks led by park staff. The weather-dependent Jump Talks begin at 1 p.m. at the upper visitor area and last about 30 minutes. The free programs will be offered every Saturday through August 30, and no advance registration is needed.

Saturday May 31 – Weed pull at Tower Rock State Park - Tower Rock State Park is looking for volunteers to assist with a weed pull inside the area of the park which burned in 2024 to remove noxious weeds and help give the native plants room to grow and thrive. Gloves and water will be provided for volunteers, or bring your own, and wear closed-toe boots along with long pants and shirts. Call 406-866-2217 or email firstpeoplesbuffalojump@mt.gov to register.
