Hunter, Bowhunter Ed Classes Offered in SE Montana in July, August

There are some Hunter and Bowhunter Education courses coming up in southeast Montana in July and August. More classes may be posted in other communities at later dates. As of this week, there are no Trapper Ed courses scheduled in FWP Region 7, but the goal is to offer at least one course in the region before October.

Interested people are advised to check back periodically on availability of Hunter Ed, Bowhunter Ed and Trapper Ed classes near you, by visiting:

https://fwp.mt.gov/education/hunter-education

All of these courses are free and taught by volunteer instructors. Registration for classes is online at https://fwp.mt.gov/education/hunter-education; some also offer walk-in registration. After registering, print out all required documents and bring them to class. For those under 18, parents must be present the first evening. Participants will be given a manual to read and should finish chapter quizzes before class begins. Students must attend all sessions to be certified.

IN-PERSON HUNTER EDUCATION FIELD DAYS FOR ONLINE STUDENTS

Students ages 12-17 can take the online Hunter Education course (there is a fee), but they must still attend an in-person field day (no cost) to become certified. Some classroom courses accept online students in their field day, while others do not. The other option is to register for a separate field day for online students.

Completion of the online course is required prior to registering for an in-person field day. You will be asked to show your Field Day Qualifier Certificate by the instructor on the day of your event.

The purpose of the field day is for students to receive instruction and practice, and then to demonstrate their skills and knowledge in two key areas: firearm safety and hunting ethics. Instructors provide hands-on lessons and present realistic scenarios, then evaluate students on their understanding and competency (downloadable Evaluation Form at fwp.mt.gov).

Miles City

An In-Person Hunter Education Field Day for Online Students will be offered in Miles City on Saturday, Aug. 9 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at Spotted Eagle Recreation Area.

This is a combination field day for online students for both Hunter Education and Bowhunter Education, possibly the only combination course to be offered in Miles City this year. Students can become certified in both Hunter and Bow Ed, but only if they complete both online courses before the field day.

At the time of publication, the class was full with a waiting list, but interested people should check the website for possible cancellations.
