The Firearms Policy Coalition (FPC) praised the Senate Finance Committee on its wise and courageous leadership in proposing a number of critically important and constitutionally required firearm law and tax reforms in the budget reconciliation package (at section 70436, “Elimination Of Tax On Certain Devices Under The National Firearms Act”).
The Committee’s proposed amendments will eliminate unconstitutional taxes, restrictions, and red tape on the lawful purchase and possession of popular, constitutionally protected firearms and firearm suppressors, making them more accessible to law-abiding Americans.
“We applaud the Senate Finance Committee for taking bold, principled action to champion these important, common-sense reforms,” said FPC President Brandon Combs. “The Committee’s proposed firearm tax and related regulatory changes are a significant step towards a historic victory for all peaceable Americans. Constitutionally protected firearms and safety devices should not be treated like criminal contraband nor punitively taxed out of reach.”
“The facts are clear: the wildly popular firearms and safety devices at issue here are overwhelmingly possessed and used by gun owners for lawful purposes. That places them squarely within the textual and historical protections of the Second Amendment,” Combs continued. “The Senate Finance Committee made the right call by rejecting fear-based rhetoric and recognizing the health, safety, and constitutional benefits of these reforms.”
FPC urges the full Senate to follow the Committee’s lead and preserve the reforms in the final reconciliation bill.
“This is a defining moment,” said Combs. “The Senate now has a choice: uphold the rights and well-being of the American people or cave to the misinformation and hysteria that have kept these firearms and safety devices subject to unconstitutional laws and excessive taxes for far too long.”
FPC will continue to advocate for the full passage of the reconciliation bill with these reform provisions intact and grade related votes.
