VIRGINIA BEACH, VA — Fort Bliss spans nearly 1.12 million acres across Texas and New Mexico and offers some of this nation’s most unique public hunting opportunities for game such as deer, javelina, elk, pronghorn and exotic species such as Barbary sheep. It is also one of the few places in North America to offer public hunting opportunities for oryx. The famed base is also the latest U.S. Army installation to launch iSportsman, an online recreational program management service that allows Fort Bliss’s Directorate of Public Works, Environmental Division to sell hunting permits, manage hunt area access and collect harvest data for better management of the resource.
“Fort Bliss is the 23rd Army installation to contract for iSportsman and is the third military base in Texas to use the service to help manage it’s natural resource-based recreation,” says Doug Howlett, chief operating officer of iSportsman, LLC. The service is currently used on Fort Hood and the Camp Bullis portion of Joint Base San Antonio as well.
iSportsman was named the enterprise-level solution for managing the U.S. Army’s hunting and fishing based recreational programs in 2016 and since that time use of the service has expanded to bases across the continental United States, as well as Alaska and Hawaii. The service is also the enterprise-level solution for the U.S. Air Force’s hunting and fishing programs and is currently set up on 17 Air Force bases.
In addition to the DoD, iSportsman is used for checking in and checking out and harvest reporting on a number of public hunting areas managed or owned by the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism as well as for permit sales on the USFWS’s Tensas River National Wildlife Refuge.
