Activities include field trip with fish biologist, fish dissection, water distribution

MILES CITY – Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks will offer a free, fish-themed Aquatic WILD Teacher Workshop in Miles City on Thursday, Oct. 17 at Miles Community College from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

The all-day workshop is a fun, hands-on training for teachers, immersing them in the award-winning Project WILD/Aquatic WILD curriculum from the Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies. Each attendee will participate in several take-home lessons and receive a free Project WILD curriculum guide and other materials to utilize in the classroom.

FWP regional fisheries manager Mike Backes will lead a field trip to demonstrate how fish biologists monitor various species of fish in area rivers. Participants will remain on shore.

Guest speakers also include FWP non-game biologist Amanda Hall and technician Ella Engelhard, who will explain the work FWP does with bats, and provide several take-home lessons on bats that teachers can use during Bat Week on Oct. 24-31.

Ryan Schmaltz of Helena’s Montana WILD education center will lead some of the hands-on activities, which include fish identification, fish dissection, Gyotaku Japanese fish printing, fish math and water distribution.

This workshop will offer OPI renewal credits and show educators how to integrate fish and wildlife education into their classrooms.

The workshop will run from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at Miles Community College’s Room 106. The college is located at 2715 Dickinson St. Lunch will be provided.

Space is limited, so early registration is encouraged. Register by Oct. 15 by calling 406-234-0926 or emailing mprell@mt.gov. Travel reimbursement is available, as well as lodging if needed.
