This week on Deer and Wildlife Stories, host Keith Warren takes viewers behind the scenes of CC Bar Whitetails in Redwater, Texas. In a special segment, Keith explores how owner Hank Corbell and his family have built one of the most innovative and respected whitetail deer operations in the country. With over 500 head of whitetail deer, CC Bar has earned a reputation as a trailblazer in the whitetail world. Known for having one of the largest captive herds of CWD-resistant deer, Hank and his family are at the forefront of the fight against Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD).
In an era of unpredictable deer farming, Hank and his wife, Shauna, have been at the forefront of breeding CWD out of their herd, setting a new standard for whitetail breeders nationwide. Their operation is widely regarded as one of the most successful examples of sustainable and healthy deer farming, with demand for exceptional CWD-resistant genetics growing year after year.
One of the keys to CC Bar Whitetails’ success is that virtually the entire herd is comprised of S/S marker deer. These deer are bred with this specialized genetic makeup and have been scientifically proven to show increased durability and resistance to CWD. These special deer are now gaining attention from agencies that see the SS allele at Codon 96 as the best method to reverse CWD in the wild deer herd. Releasing these superior CWD-durable deer will help improve overall herd health through genetic diversity and, at the same time, produce more quality animals for the general public. As past restocking efforts brought the vigor of genetic diversity to our wild herds, over time, they have become inbred.
Deer and Wildlife Stories’ goal is to provide viewers with the knowledge they need to make better decisions regarding managing deer herds. Through episodes like this, viewers get an inside look at the best management practices on captive deer herds, which are the only places where research of this magnitude can be conducted. Host Keith Warren says, “This research will undoubtedly help those who are concerned about CWD in wild deer herds. My prediction is that one day soon, more and more states will realize that the only way to combat CWD and do so in a meaningful way is to introduce these kinds of genetics into the wild deer”.
Deer and Wildlife Stories is a renowned platform for the whitetail deer enthusiast. By focusing on captive deer farming, this program shares valuable scientific information with all whitetail enthusiasts that can only be obtained through the captive breeding of deer. This information is proving valuable to the country's professional wildlife biologists as they consider management decisions for the nation’s wild deer population.
