SAF, Partners File Amicus Brief with SCOTUS in Rights Restoration Case

BELLEVUE, Wash. —— The Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) and its partners have filed an amicus brief with the Supreme Court urging the high court to hear a gun rights restoration case.

The brief was filed in support of Melynda Vincent’s petition for writ of certiorari in Vincent v. Bondi. Vincent, a single mother living in Utah, was convicted of bank fraud 17 years ago for writing a bad check in the amount of $498 to a grocery store. Since that non-violent felony conviction, she has been unable to own a firearm to protect herself or her family.

“We think it’s time for the Supreme Court to end the lifetime prohibition from owning guns for people convicted of a non-violent crime,” said SAF Director of Legal Operations Bill Sack. “The history and tradition of firearm regulation in the country supports disarming only those individuals whose convictions indicate they are a threat to themselves or society. Disarming a single mother for a white-collar crime is as unconstitutional as it is nonsensical.”

Joining SAF in the brief are the National Rifle Association, Firearms Policy Coalition and FPC Action Foundation.

“Like countless others, Ms. Vincent’s non-violent conviction gives no impression that she is a danger to society, and she deserves the right to defend her family just like other peaceable citizens,” said SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb. “Writing a single bad check is not dangerous behavior that should preclude anyone from the ability to protect themselves. We respectfully ask the Supreme Court to hear this case so Ms. Vincent, and thousands like her across the U.S., regain their Second Amendment rights.”
