APPLETON, Wis. – RECOIL Magazine, a publication of CMG West, LLC, has released its latest issue, number 60. While it’s always fun to point and laugh at anyone who claims their poverty pony AR is “just as good as” an LMT or FN, like a stopped clock, sometimes they’re right. Truth is, like the automotive industry, almost nobody in the firearms biz is making complete garbage these days, and the era of turds like the K car, AMT Hardballer, and Speshul Wepuns MP5 clones are thankfully in the rearview mirror. So we argue over minute details and get bent out of shape when someone on social media doesn’t like exactly what tickles our fancy.
Yes, there are still appreciable distinctions between products, but when it comes to purchase decisions as uniquely individual as personal weapons, we have a natural tendency to get hung up on minutiae. There’s a reason ancient warriors spent comparatively huge sums on their swords and armor to personalize them — we’re all invested in their performance to a degree that’s rare in any other category of consumer goods.
So we currently find ourselves in a situation where almost any mainstream rifle or pistol will serve adequately, coupled with a social media universe that selects for outrage. You need only scroll through Instagram to find people becoming indignant over the dumbest stuff when it comes to hardware, while ignoring the biggest factor when it comes to placing rounds on target — namely their own ability to master any given weapon system. How many angels can dance on the top of a Glock clone?
At RECOIL we attempt to bring you honest information, based on first-hand experience and empirical data, so you can make informed decisions when it comes to firearms, equipment, and most importantly, your personal skill set. Take as an example this issue’s cover gun — there’s a reason that up till now, Mossberg autoloaders have been conspicuously absent from these pages. Their new shotgun corrects the deficiencies of previous models, and while we’re still in the process of trying to break it, we’re cautiously optimistic that it genuinely is “just as good as” and will give the Italian manufacturers some much needed competition. All of which means nothing if we can’t operate it efficiently and accurately. So put down the phone and go train.
Other features include our interview with SureFire’s Barry Dueck, a review of the Springfield Armory SAINT, a piece on where legislation is headed on lead ammo and fishing lures, a homemade American Vintorez, and a look at modern airguns.
