Next Week is Clean Drain Dry Week

White Bear Lake, MN – May 30, 2025 — As National Fishing and Boating Week kicks off, local organizers are launching Clean Drain Dry Week, a public awareness campaign aimed at preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species (AIS). Boaters, anglers, and outdoor enthusiasts are encouraged to take three simple actions every time they enjoy the water: Clean. Drain. Dry.

Aquatic invasive species—like zebra mussels and Eurasian watermilfoil—pose a serious threat to local lakes, rivers, and native ecosystems. These hitchhikers can easily spread when watercraft and equipment are not properly cleaned after use.

"Prevention is the best defense, and it starts with each of us," said Zach Burnside, Invasive Species Program Manager of Wildlife Forever. "By cleaning your boat, draining all water, and drying your gear after every trip, you're helping to protect the waters we all love."

How to Participate

  • Clean off all visible plants, animals, and mud from boats and gear.

  • Drain water from bilges, live wells, and other compartments.

  • Dry everything for at least 5 days—or use a towel—before visiting another waterbody.

The effort is part of a growing nationwide movement to promote responsible outdoor recreation during one of the most popular times of year for boating and fishing.

Wildlife Forever through its funding partners is a national leader in developing, educating and engaging the public in programs to battle and avoid spreading invasive species. Additional programs include:
