APPLETON, Wis. – CONCEALMENT Magazine, a publication of CMG West, LLC, has released its latest issue, number 28, with the latest in home and self-defense, new firearms reviews, and expert advice on concealed carry.

It’s no surprise to anyone who hasn’t been living in a cave that the last several years have been uniquely challenging for the 21st century. With pandemics, lockdowns, global economic strife, and wars both old and new, we’ve just now begun to deal with what’s become our new reality. Many turn to unhealthy coping mechanisms to deal with both stress and boredom, and per the National Institute of Health (NIH) 60 percent of the population of adults who drink increased their consumption since the beginning of the pandemic.

This, combined with isolation, brought fears of increased intimate partner violence and child abuse when stay-at-home orders rolled out, and the latest analysis from multiple agencies confirm the worst. The National Commission on COVID-19 and Criminal Justice (NCCCJ) reported an 8.1-percent increase in domestic violence incidents, something any experienced beat cop would say is underestimated. The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) reports that in the United States roughly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner or family member.

The murder of Gabby Petito by an abusive partner in summer 2021 made national headlines but the reality is that it’s neither novel nor rare. Per the latest FBI crime data, an average of three men a day will murder a current or former partner. For those living with an abusive partner, be it coercive control or physical violence, the most dangerous times are the first couple years after the relationship ends (no matter who ends it or how it ends) and if the target of abuse becomes pregnant. Homicide is the leading cause of death for those who are pregnant, and this risk outstrips other maternal death causes.

While CONCEALMENT is a “gun magazine,” we do far more than mere reviews of new products. We take a holistic view of violence prevention, and this issue addresses identification and warning signs of interpersonal violence, along with some concrete steps for victims to protect themselves. This is ground we’ve trodden before, and a particularly good experiential article on abuse and protective orders was written by Sara Westman in CONCEALMENT Issue 17. In this issue, Annette Evans, a relative newcomer to CONCEALMENT, but by no means new, writes about confronting family violence on page 84. Melody Lauer of Citizens Defense Research covers the dangers of stalking and how to recognize the signs and protect yourself.

These can be sticky issues, with many who would rather turn a blind eye than get involved themselves. But your involvement doesn’t necessarily mean running in like Rambo; being a safe person someone in an abusive relationship can trust, talk to, find resources, and plan escapes with can be very effective in getting people out of bad situations.
