Savage Impulse Featured In July GUNS

“A hunter should be able to run their bolt-action fast enough and smoothly enough to come out of recoil ready to fire again,” asserts Wayne Van Zwoll. “Savage has just made it easier.” The company’s new straight-pull rifle, the Impulse, is featured in the July issue of GUNS Magazine.

The straight-pull concept dates back to the 1880s, and the Impulse brings it into the 21st century by offering accuracy and speed in a variety of hunting calibers. Van Zwoll notes of the test gun chambered in .300 Win., “Rifle intact and case inspection done, I was soon perforating the middle of a 100-yard target. The winner of the day was Federal’s 200-grain Terminal Ascent ammo. It kept sending bullets into 0.8".”

Addressing self-defense for shooters who are mobility-challenged, David Freeman shares how he continues to carry concealed and regularly shoot from an electric wheelchair. From pistol options and real gun belts to holsters and how to modify a shooting stance, David advises ways to adapt to physical limitations. He shares, “In a defensive situation I may not have anything to brace on so I sometimes practice as if I won’t have it. This is where the fundamentals of proper grip, sight alignment, breathing, trigger pull and follow-through are so important. You’ve been taught these, right? If not, spend the money for instruction with a qualified handgun instructor.”

A Rock Island Armory VR82 shotgun tops the July Firearms Giveaway Package. The 20-GA has a 5+1 capacity, 18" contoured barrel and features such as flip-up sights and ambidextrous controls. The winner will also receive a Streamlight PROTAC 1L-1AA and Bona Fide knife from CRKT. Combined, the package is valued at nearly $875. July GUNS also highlights the “jack-of-all-trades” — the .308 Winchester cartridge — in the Rifles column. For better, stronger and faster airgun shooting, Tom McHale names his favorite must-have accessories in the Air Power installment. Competitive shooter Serena Juchnowski provides a basic guide to the sport and equipment used in Palma rifle competitions while Will Dabbs, MD serves as interpreter for battle-damaged weapons in Surplus & Classic’s “Guns That Speak.”
