ANGLER, AUTHOR TONY PEÑA PASSES AFTER HEART ATTACK
VALLEY CENTER, Calif. – Tony Pena, 70, an international angler, writer and photographer, died Jan. 17 of an apparent heart attack in his San Diego area home, announced his widow Sabrina.
Services for Peña will be conducted Feb. 16 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 426 E. 7th St., National City, at 10 a.m. His ashes will eventually be spread off San Diego Bay and Panama.
Pena was a 1970 graduate – with honors – of San Diego State University. He subsequently served the school as a graduate assistant in geography.
After 36 years, in 2008 Peña retired from the City of Coronado as Director of Community Development.
A lifelong fisherman, he began in the backwaters of San Diego Bay with a hand line at age five.
He began working aboard fishing boats, soon publishing articles and photos in outdoor magazines. Subsequently, as a freelance writer and photographer, he traveled to some 19 countries including Thailand, the Marshall Islands, Palau, Fiji, Panama, Costa Rica and Venezuela, setting 18 IGFA world records in the process. During his career as a fishing guide, he led other anglers to 17 IGFA world records.
Referred to as the “Roving Angler,” Peña promoted the benefits of catch-and-release throughout his travels.
Survivors include his widow and their daughter Andreona.
