Weekly events continue at Great Falls area state parks

GREAT FALLS – Summer events continue into August at two state parks near Great Falls, with a guided evening hike, trivia competitions, and interpretive talks.

First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park

The full moon during the month of August is known as the “Sturgeon Moon”, and First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park near Ulm is offering a guided three-mile evening hike to enjoy views of the moon and night sky from the buffalo jump. The moderately difficult ranger-led hike costs $4 per person, and will take place on Aug. 8 from 8 – 10 p.m. The hike is limited to 25 participants, and registrations can be made by calling the park at 406-866-2217.

In addition to the full moon hike at the park, weekly “Jump Talks” continue at the top of the buffalo jump every Saturday through Aug. 30. The free interpretive talks begin at 1 p.m. at the upper visitor area, and last about 30 minutes. Visitors will learn the history of the park along with the sacred sites found there with a focus upon how the First Peoples drove bison over the cliff edge. Talks may be cancelled in the event of poor weather.

First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park is located 3.5 miles north of Ulm, just off Interstate 15 at exit 270. For directions or more information about First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park visit: stateparks.mt.gov/first-peoples-buffalo-jump

Giant Springs State Park

Bring your thinking cap and a team of seven or fewer players to enjoy a weekly night of competitive, random-category, family-friendly trivia every Tuesday through Aug. 26. Trivia nights will be held in the grassy area adjacent to the Giant Springs and fish hatchery, with prizes awarded to the top three scoring teams. Bring a lawn chair, food, and drink to comfortably enjoy four rounds of trivia with 10 questions each. Pre-registration is not required to participate, but players should arrive before 7 p.m. to register their team. All events are dependent on reasonable weather conditions. Check the park's Facebook page or call 406-727-1212 for information on cancellations due to weather.

Montana residents are entitled to free daily entrance to all state parks through the payment of vehicle registration fees. Out of state vehicles are required to purchase a park pass for entry into the park.
