The public can learn about archaeology in Indiana during an Aug. 25 symposium in Bloomington that kicks off Indiana Archaeology Month.

The Indiana Public Archaeology Symposium takes place at the Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology,423 N. Fess Ave., Bloomington. Presentations start at 9 a.m.

The event is sponsored by the DNR Division of Historic Preservation & Archaeology (DHPA), the Glenn A. Black lab, Indiana University and the Indiana Archaeology Council.

K. Anne Pyburn of IU will deliver the keynote presentation. Other speakers include State Archaeologist Amy Johnson and DHPA archaeologists Rachel Sharkey and Cathy Draeger-Williams.

Other presentations and posters will cover Indiana maritime heritage, IU campus and community archaeology, public outreach methods, and more. Exclusive tours of the Glenn A. Black lab will also be available.

"The Indiana Public Archaeology Symposium provides a perfect way for Hoosiers to find out about archaeology in our state and how they can become involved in learning about the past," said Cameron Clark, DNR director and State Historic Preservation Officer.

The cost to attend the symposium is $5 for non-students, $3 for students with ID. There is no admission cost for Indiana Archaeology Council members.
Archaeology Month officially starts Sept. 1.

It is an opportunity to celebrate and learn about Indiana archaeology. A schedule of events and additional information is at dnr.IN.gov/historic.

Commemorative Archaeology Month posters will be available at the symposium, as will various archaeology handouts, including “Early Peoples of Indiana.” Additionally, membership information for the Indiana Archaeology Council will be available.
