Iowa S3DA Hosts 3D State Championship at Big Hollow Recreation Area

Big Hollow Recreation Area recently served as the scenic backdrop for the Iowa S3DA 3D State Championship. Archers from across the state gathered for the annual event, with participants representing Flint River Archery Club, Wapsi Valley Archery, Central Iowa Archers, and JaCo S3DA.

The course at Big Hollow delivered a memorable experience for all ages, offering a mix of fun and challenging 3D target shots along a wooded trail. With the continued expansion of Iowa S3DA, more young archers and teams are joining the program, bringing fresh energy and enthusiasm to every competition.

For the first time, Iowa S3DA introduced 3D shootdowns – a competitive format used at national events. “It was really exciting to introduce 3D shootdowns this year,” said Iowa S3DA State Coordinator Denissa Cornick. “It gives our archers a chance to experience the kind of competition they’ll see at the national level, but in a comfortable, local environment. We’re committed to following national standards while also making the program welcoming to new families. Balance is key, and seeing so many kids growing, learning, and just having fun made the whole day worth it. We’re so grateful for this community and excited for what’s ahead!”

Youth archer Alina Cornick from Flint River Archery Club shared, “It was cool to have a 3D shootdown like other states. It gave me a better idea of what to expect at nationals and made me feel more confident heading into that event.”

Eagle division archer Jackson Van Polen of Central Iowa Archers added, “I liked that we got to try different kinds of shots and walk through the woods – it was a lot of fun!”

In addition to the competition, families enjoyed the Iowa S3DA Conservation booth, which featured interactive wildlife education. Archers and attendees had the chance to learn about various animal calls using turkey calls, grunt tubes, and crow calls, while also viewing whitetail deer antlers and skulls. Conservation Coordinator Zach Cornick said, “As a coach and parent, it was really fun seeing so many kids out there just enjoying archery and learning about wildlife. The event was very well run, and it’s exciting to see those smiling faces each time we have an event.”

Iowa S3DA presented a full range of awards, including individual and team achievements, as well as 3D Shooter of the Year honors, which recognized archers who attended and participated in at least three Iowa 3D regional events and the State Championship with the highest combined scores.

The day was capped off with an abundance of door prizes – so many that every participating archer went home with something. Prizes included: Delta McKenzie 20” Speed Bag Targets, Archery-themed LEGO sets, Grunt tubes, turkey and crow calls, Flashlights and deer lures, Halo rangefinders, Vortex binoculars, rattle bags, outdoor bow hangers, arrows, arrow tube holders, allen wrench sets, retractable lanyards, archery socks, gift cards and much more! These giveaways were made possible through generous donations from Wapsi Valley Archery, Walker Burgess, Jill and Brian Wunderlich, Sarah Grisham, Peggy Wunderlich, and other anonymous supporters. Boy Scout Troop 3 also played a key role, managing concessions for the event and using all the proceeds to support their local troop.

Iowa S3DA extends sincere thanks to everyone who helped make this event a success. From donors and volunteers to photographers, coaches, parents, and archers – every contribution made a difference. Special recognition goes to Monica Eisenmann for capturing the spirit of the day through her photography and to all those who assisted with set-up, tear-down, and the smooth operation of the championship.

With continued growth, strong community support, and a commitment to making youth archery both competitive and fun, Iowa S3DA is looking ahead to a bright future.
