Events offered in Sidney, Glasgow
MILES CITY – Two trapper education field days will be offered in eastern Montana in August, ahead of the fall season. The Glasgow field day is Aug. 10 and the Sidney field day is Aug. 23 (details below).
Who needs Trapper Education?
To buy a Montana resident Class C trapping license, residents must complete a Montana trapper education course or have purchased a trapping license in at least three prior years (in Montana or another state). The course consists of an online component, an in-person field day, and written test. This general trapper education course also satisfies the Montana wolf trapper education requirement.
To register for a field day, people must first complete the self-paced online course available to anyone 11 and older. The course takes 5-6 hours to complete. A promotional code offered through FWP will cover the cost. To register and find the code, visit https://fwp.mt.gov/hunt/education/trapping.
Once you have completed the online course, you will receive a field day qualifier certificate. Use the number on that to register for a field day on the same site, https://fwp.mt.gov/hunt/education/trapping. You will also present that certificate when arriving at the field day.
In-person field days are led by volunteer instructors who are passionate about preserving Montana’s rich trapping tradition, teaching safety, ethics, avoidance of non-target animals, humane methods, and other trapping skills.
For the Glasgow and Sidney field days, participants should bring a lunch or make arrangements to pick up a lunch during the break. Please wear clothing and shoes appropriate for trapping and for the weather. Some of the field day exercises will be conducted outdoors.
Upon completion of the online course and field day, residents who are 12 and older can purchase a Class C trapping license. Youth 6-11 years old must purchase a Class C-3 trapping license. They are exempt from the requirement to take trapper education and are limited to what animals they can trap.
We strongly encourage students to register for a field day as soon as possible, as opportunities are limited after Oct. 1 each year. This is because nearly all instructors are in the field trapping and unavailable to teach during the fall/winter trapping season. Please note, if students take the online class in the fall, there may not be another field day scheduled until spring the following year.
Montana also offers Nonresident Trapping Reciprocity. For more information on that, visit
