South Dakota —With months of preparing her land as a “buck paradise” behind her, Melissa Bachman is ready to see if her hard work pays off on this week’s Winchester Deadly Passion on Sportsman Channel. From installing rub posts to licking branches and even digging several water holes, Melissa and her husband, Ben Bearshield, have seen monster bucks step into their mini-paradise on their Spypoint Cameras. Melissa and Ben have been spending their summers prepping remote parts of land as their own “buck paradise.” They are hoping all this hard work of digging water holes and installing rub posts will pay off when the weather turns colder. “Many people tell me they don’t think they need a water hole as the deer have many other options for water on their land,” shared Bachman. “And actually we have that as well – we have ponds and streams accessible for the deer here, but we’ve found that the deer prefer our water holes as we place them in remote areas, but near active deer trails. Plus, during the rut, the bucks are run down and thirsty, and you just offered them an easy stop.”

Their Spypoint Cameras show the deer are active at night, so Melissa installed a Wildlife Research Center scrape dripper that releases scent during daytime only over a mock scrape. “Installing the dripper on our rub post helped move those nocktural bucks to check out the area during the day as they could see and smell activity,” explained Bachman.
