Indiana Audubon invites birders, families and nature lovers to celebrate the height of spring bird migration at the 2025 Indiana Dunes Birding Festival, set for May 15-18 at sites throughout the Indiana Dunes region and beyond.
The festival is headquartered at the Indiana Dunes Visitor center, 1215 N. State Road 49 in Porter. The Visitor Center serves as the central hub for festival information, on-site registration and several public events, including the Migration Marketplace and the “Dune Birds in Art” exhibition.
The festival begins Wednesday, May 15, with a public launch event from 6 to 9 p.m. Central time at the Visitor Center. Guests can view the annual “Dune Birds in Art” exhibition, which features 20 bird-inspired works by more than a dozen regional artists. The selections were chosen from 60 entries by juror Lindsay Sandbothe. Festival artist Kristina Knowski, designer of the 2025 Belted Kingfisher festival logo, will also unveil this year’s official festival fine art print. Prints will be available for purchase following the unveiling.
The Migration Marketplace tent will be open at the Visitor Center from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Nearly 30 vendors will be on hand, offering birding optics and gear, nature themed art, native plants and conservation resources. Live bird shows by Humane Indiana Wildlife will take place at 1:30 p.m. each day, and food trucks will serve lunch near the tent.
Families are encouraged to attend Youth and Family Birding Day on Saturday, May 17, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Indiana Dunes State Park Nature Center. This offsite event includes bird hikes, nest box building, crafts, owl pellet dissections, games and a live bird presentation by Humane Indiana Wildlife at noon. A limited number of binoculars will be available to borrow for use during the event. Registration is not required, and attendees may come and go throughout the day.
Youth and Family Birding Day is supported in part by the Flora Richardson Foundation.
Although online registration for the Indiana Dunes Birding Festival has closed, limited walk-in registrations will be accepted beginning at 4 p.m. on May 15 at the Visitor Center. For more information about festival events, visit indunesbirdingfestival.com.
