APPLETON, Wis. (January 25, 2022) – RECOIL Magazine, a publication of CMG West, LLC, has released its latest issue, number 59. For a while, it seemed like Springfield Armory was getting a bit stodgy, content to rest on the laurels of its line of XDs, 1911s, and M1A semi-autos, but having been read into their plans for the coming year, it’d seem that the company has been given a new lease on life. The gun on this magazine’s cover is evidence of that, and having seen not only the end result but also the design and production facility behind it, we’re pretty impressed. These past few months have seen a flurry of new product introductions, as gun companies in general have transitioned from getting product out the door as soon as possible to having time to perfect the projects they were working on before COVID upset everyone’s plans. Yes, sales records are still being set, but the general feeling is that new designs are going to hit the shelves steadily throughout 2022, instead of being concentrated in January.

It was inevitable that the Wuflu would bring changes to not only everyone’s daily life, but to our little corner of world commerce, too. And while firearms manufacturers haven’t suffered from, say, a chip shortage that directly affects product leaving the loading dock, we’ve seen increases in material costs across the board, and supply chain snafus like everyone else.

This issue of RECOIL drops right at the beginning of SHOT Show, the annual gun industry shindig in Vegas that’s both a blessing and a curse. We expect the event to be considerably quieter than years past, as several big names won’t be attending. Although COVID worries have been cited as the reason, we suspect the likes of SIG gave up their massive, multimillion-dollar booths because they simply don’t need it. Why spend that kind of coin when you’re already backordered for two years? Which brings up the survivability of the NSSF, the gun industry trade body which relies on SHOT Show for much of its revenue. With the almost universal adoption of virtual meetings, companies are weighing the benefits of trade shows against their enormous cost; many are finding they don’t pencil out.

Start of year prognostications are a tradition that won’t go away, and we’ll see in 11 months just how many turned out to be true. As my old platoon sergeant would say, “Sir, my balls are hairy, not crystal.” But if everything we’ve been privy to comes to pass, 2022 is going to be a good year for consumer choice in the gun world.

Other features include our interview with Autumn’s Armory, a review of the Bushmaster 450, and enter for a chance to win a Ferret, courtesy of National Association for Gun Rights.
