Custom Gary Reeder Ruger Bearcat Steals The Sept. GUNS Spotlight

Gary Reeder’s custom “Trail Gun” falls neatly into the “Perfect Packin’ Pistol” category coined by GUNS’ own John Taffin. Featured in the Sept. issue by FMG Special Projects Editor Roy Huntington, a Reeder-enhanced Ruger Bearcat ramps up the game in several important areas at the same time.

The first upgrade is a fitted Reeder unfluted .22 Mag. cylinder, then a slightly heavier barrel that got a “Deep Dish Crown” and onto a complete action job and more. “Between the better trigger pull, upgraded muzzle crown and recut forcing cone, Reeder says, ‘We guarantee it will cut a customer’s groups in half.’ Based on my own shooting,” Roy lends, “he’s right.”

In the market for a used revolver? Clayton Walker lends his advice in “How To Evaluate A Used Revolver: Does It Run — Or Should You?” From ways to assess function and timing to other important safety checks, Walker’s tips will help good guns find good homes.

An IWI US Carmel chambered in 5.56 NATO awaits the winner of the Sept. GUNS Firearms Package Giveaway. Key features include a 16" barrel, two adjustable gas settings, M-LOK compatible handguard and two-stage trigger. Valued at $1,799, readers are encouraged to enter the free drawing by visiting GunsMagazine.com/giveaways.

Other points of interest in the September issue discuss the advantages and caveats of “Living The Cocked-And-Locked Lifestyle” — as Massad Ayoob sees them — in the Handguns column. Though rare these days, WWII surplus caches still turn up. In Surplus & Classic, Frank Jardim shares the recent discovery of Portuguese Mauser m937s, unicorns of the U.S. collector market. And the GUNS and Handgunner teams bid a fond farewell to longtime contributor, friend and true gentleman, Mike “Duke” Venturino, in Montana Musings.
