Wild Giants Conservation Fund is supporting the Georgia Wildlife Monitoring Program and an eight-person field team that will be working across the rugged landscapes of the Caucasus to document wildlife and monitor the challenges facing the region's wild places.
This team, part of the Georgian Wildlife Agency, will be on the ground monitoring the landscape and wildlife, watching for everything from wildlife activity and predators to signs of poaching and other threats. Their work will provide an important field-level view of what is happening across an area that is remote, expansive and difficult to monitor.
For Wild Giants, that information is critical.
"Rewilding starts with knowing what is happening on the ground," said Tanner Tripp, Founder and Executive Director of Wild Giants Conservation Fund. "This team will give us eyes in the field seeing the wildlife, understanding the pressures they face and helping us build a much clearer picture of the Caucasus."
The Georgia Wildlife Monitoring Program will help document wildlife and conditions across the region while providing valuable information about the species and threats present in the landscape. The team's observations will contribute to a better understanding of the area and help inform future conservation and rewilding efforts.
The Caucasus is one of the world's great wild landscapes but protecting that wildness requires more than simply knowing it exists. It requires people in the field, paying attention to what is happening and identifying both opportunities and threats.
Wild Giants' support of the monitoring program is part of its broader commitment to restoring the wild heart of the Caucasus. By helping put boots on the ground, the organization is supporting the people doing the difficult work of documenting and protecting this landscape.
"Every successful conservation effort starts with information," said Tripp. "You cannot protect what you do not understand. Having an eight-person team out there monitoring this landscape gives us an opportunity to see what is really happening and that is where meaningful conservation begins."
