Safari Club International leaders recently joined President Donald Trump and U.S. Sen. Dan S. Sullivan in Alaska as Sullivan campaigns for reelection to the U.S. Senate.
The SCI delegation included SCI President Jeff Meyerl, incoming SCI President Mike Crawford, Alaska Chapter President John Sturgeon, and Keegan McCarthy, owner and operator of Coastal Alaska Adventures.
The Alaska visit follows SCI-PAC's endorsement of Sullivan for reelection and underscores the importance of elected leaders who understand the connection between hunting, conservation and responsible wildlife management.
"Throughout his time in the Senate, Sullivan has consistently defended Alaska's authority to manage its wildlife, challenged federal restrictions affecting hunting and predator management, supported public access for hunters and recreational shooters, and voted to protect funding for school hunting, archery and shooting sports programs," Said Jeff Meyerl, President Safari Club International.
Sullivan has repeatedly pushed back against federal wildlife regulations affecting millions of acres of national wildlife refuges in Alaska, arguing that wildlife management decisions should respect the state's management authority. He has also supported legislation protecting public access for hunting and recreational shooting.
Sullivan also voted for the Protecting Hunting Heritage and Education Act, which restored federal funding for school hunting, archery and shooting sports education programs affected by implementation of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act.
For SCI and its members, these are not abstract policy debates. They determine whether hunters have access, whether states can manage wildlife using sound science, whether young people have opportunities to discover the outdoors and whether America's hunting heritage remains strong for future generations.
SCI-PAC's endorsement of Sullivan reflects his record on issues directly affecting hunters and wildlife conservation.
SCI works every day to protect the freedom to hunt, advance science-based wildlife conservation and preserve hunting opportunities for future generations. That work takes place in legislatures, regulatory agencies, courts and communities across the country.
Having elected leaders who understand the role hunters play in conservation and who are willing to defend hunting access and state wildlife management remains an important part of that effort.
