Ballistic's Best 2026 Puts 11 Bolt-Action Hunting Rifles Through the Grinder

A hunting rifle can look great on paper. It can have the right cartridge, the right stock, the right barrel and enough marketing copy to fill a saddlebag. But none of that matters much when it's time to put five rounds on paper, or make the shot that counts. That's why Ballistic's Best 2026: Hunting Edition is putting 11 of this year's most interesting bolt-action hunting rifles through a serious, standardized evaluation.

This year's lineup represents one of the most diverse collections of hunting rifles Ballistic's Best has tested, spanning traditional hunting platforms, ultralight mountain rifles, modern chassis designs and some decidedly unconventional bolt guns. Chamberings range from proven classics to some of the newest cartridges hitting the hunting market, including .25 Creedmoor and 7mm Backcountry, while 7mm PRC continues its march into the mainstream.

And because a $3,000 rifle and a $700 rifle don't exactly play by the same rules, Ballistic's Best divides the field into two categories: Bolt-Action Hunting Rifles Under $1,000 and Bolt-Action Hunting Rifles Over $1,000.

The evaluation goes well beyond shooting a couple of groups and calling it a day. Each rifle is scored across nine categories: aesthetics, ergonomics, ease of mounting optics, trigger quality, recoil management, ease of reloading, accuracy, reliability and overall value. Multiple shooters put each rifle through a standardized course of fire, with multiple ammunition loads tested to determine what each rifle actually likes. Every rifle receives at least four five-shot groups per load at 100 yards, while velocity data and 200-yard energy figures are also recorded. In other words, these rifles don't get to hide behind a spec sheet.

The 2026 testing also brings together an experienced team of hunters and shooters with decades of combined experience in hunting, competition, gunsmithing and outdoor publishing. Optics from several manufacturers and ammunition from Hornady and Federal Premium help ensure the rifles are tested with quality equipment, while suppressors are incorporated into the evaluation for the threaded-barrel rifles.

From affordable workhorses to ultralight premium rifles, this year's field demonstrates just how much the modern bolt-action hunting rifle has evolved. The rifles have been tested. The scores are in. Now it's time to see which ones earned their place in Ballistic's Best 2026.
