Crossbows have come a long way from being the awkward cousin in the archery world. Today's hunting crossbows are fast, compact, accurate and packed with technology. And for the first time, Ballistic's Best is putting them through the same no-BS evaluation process applied to the rest of its Hunting Edition lineup.
For Ballistic's Best 2026: Hunting Edition, seven Ready-To-Hunt crossbow packages from Ravin, TenPoint, Barnett, CenterPoint, Wicked Ridge, Excalibur and Killer Instinct went head-to-head in the inaugural Ballistic's Best Crossbow evaluation. And it was anything but a runaway.
The field proved remarkably competitive, with just one point separating the top two finishers. Even more telling, several less-familiar names held their own against some of the biggest names in the crossbow business. After dozens of arrows downrange, the testing crew came away with one clear conclusion: there is a hell of a lot of capable hardware competing for space in today's crossbow market.
Each crossbow was evaluated across nine categories: aesthetics, ergonomics, sights, trigger, recoil, accuracy, reliability, value/price point, and weight/balance. The testing team included shooters ranging from a first-time crossbow user to an experienced bowhunter, along with a tester who has been shooting crossbows for more than four decades.
Every bow arrived as a Ready-To-Hunt package, including an optic, quiver and arrows. Performance testing included chronographing arrow speeds, while a laser rangefinding scope provided another layer of practical field evaluation. The result is a crossbow test that looks beyond advertised speed and asks the questions that actually matter to hunters: How does it handle? How easy is it to cock? How does it shoot? How consistent is it? How does it balance? And, perhaps most importantly, is it worth the money? Because 500 fps looks damn impressive on a box, but what really matters is what happens when the bow is in your hands.
The complete Ballistic's Best 2026 Crossbow evaluation takes readers inside the testing process and puts seven of today's hunting crossbows under the microscope, without relying on marketing departments to tell us which one deserves your money.
