Safari Club International (SCI) congratulates the Government of South Africa and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) on the publication of final export quotas for elephant, leopard, and black rhinoceros hunting trophies for 2026 and 2027. SCI thanks the Honorable David Maynier, Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, for bringing this important process to completion through a transparent and science-based regulatory framework.
Publication of export quotas provides much-needed certainty to conservation stakeholders, hunting operators, and communities that rely on wildlife-based economies. Sustainable hunting programs have long been a cornerstone of conservation success in southern Africa, generating revenue for habitat protection, wildlife management, anti-poaching efforts, and community development.
"Safari Club International applauds the South African government for finalizing these export quotas and reaffirming its commitment to sustainable use conservation," said Jeff Meyerl, President of Safari Club International. "These quotas are grounded in science, support conservation funding, create incentives to conserve wildlife habitat, and provide meaningful benefits to landowners and rural communities that live alongside wildlife. SCI has consistently supported the establishment and allocation of these quotas and previously submitted formal comments in favor of the proposed quotas. SCI looks forward to continuing its collaboration with South African conservation authorities and stakeholders to promote sustainable wildlife management and ensure that conservation decisions remain guided by sound science and legal certainty.
