Michigan is taking another step to prevent invasive pests and plant diseases from entering the state. Beginning Jan. 1, 2027, untreated firewood from outside Michigan will no longer be allowed to enter the state under a new firewood quarantine announced by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Michigan Invasive Species Program.
The quarantine does not apply to properly heat-treated and certified firewood, and several other wood products are exempt. Michigan is also launching an Invasive-Free Firewood Certification Program to help consumers identify firewood that meets the new requirements.
