Explore Michigan's rare oak savanna habitat during peak wild lupine bloom and learn about the federally endangered Karner blue butterfly, one of the rarest butterflies in North America. Allegan is one of only a few places where this butterfly can still reliably be found.
Here's a video preview of the rare habitat and species you may experience on the walk: Karner Blue Butterfly – Michigan Threatened Species.
During the walk, a DNR wildlife biologist will share how habitat management, including prescribed fire and restoration work, helps support lupine and the wildlife that depend on it.
Event details:
- Saturday, June 6, 9-10:30 a.m.
- Allegan State Game Area: (GPS: 42°36'30.9"N 86°02'44.9"W). Meet on 126th Avenue, east of Old Allegan Road/52nd Street and west of 48th Street. The event will be marked with signs.
