Summer Programs for Students in Southeast Michigan

This summer, students across southeast Michigan can take part in immersive outdoor learning experiences.

Designed as a partnership with urban youth organizations, the DNR's Stepping Stones program provides free programming aimed at fostering confidence, environmental awareness and a lifelong appreciation for nature for ages 9 and older. Program space is limited, so be sure to register as soon as possible. Email DNR-SteppingStones@Michigan.gov for more information about our programs and how to get involved.

We're also hosting events for organizations like Detroit Outdoors this summer. During their Harsens Island Research Adventure (June 22–26) at Algonac State Park, students ages 16–20 will work alongside outdoor educators, researchers and guides to study black terns and aquatic ecosystems in the Saint Clair Flats through bird monitoring, aquatic plant sampling and nocturnal wildlife research. The program also emphasizes teamwork, communication, resilience and place-based learning.

Additional summer opportunities through Detroit Outdoors include the Pigeon River State Forest Camping Trip (June 15–19), supported through a U.S. Forest Service Urban Forestry Grant in partnership with B.O.A.T. (Bus for Outdoor Access and Teaching), where students can explore forestry practices through hands-on experiences and networking. Teens can also participate in the Outdoor Adventure Center Teen City Explorers Day Camp (June 29–July 1), featuring field trips and outdoor activities with partners including Detroit Riverfront Conservancy and Detroit Parks and Recreation.
