Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks has selected Malia Freeman as the new communication and education program manager for Region 1 (northwest Montana).
Hailing from the Flathead Valley, Freeman brings a strong personal connection to the outdoor traditions, landscapes, and community values that define northwest Montana. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in 2018 and went on to complete both a Master of Public Administration and a Master of Public Health from the University of Montana in 2023.
Freeman joins FWP from the Flathead City-County Health Department, where she spent the past six years serving as public information officer and population health supervisor. In those roles, she gained deep experience in public-sector leadership, strategic communication, and education programming.
"Malia's background in public communication and her commitment to community engagement make her a great fit for this role," said FWP regional supervisor, Amber Steed. "Her familiarity with the region and her passion for fishing, hunting, recreation, and conservation will be a major asset to the work we do every day."
As the Region 1 communication and education program manager, Freeman will coordinate public information efforts, manage media relations, and lead education and outreach programs for local communities. The position plays a key role in helping residents and visitors understand FWP's mission, recreation opportunities, and current issues affecting wildlife, habitat, and public safety.
Freeman can be reached at Malia.Freeman@mt.gov or 406-751-4564.
