Birding Bowl Inspires Generous Next Step

Nebraska's Birding Bowl participants supported wildlife conservation by observing as many bird species as possible in May.

One birder took it to the next level.

David Cunningham, winner of the Competitive Birder 150 Species level, donated his $1,000 prize to the Nebraska Wildlife Conservation Fund. This donation will directly support nongame wildlife research, conservation, and education efforts across Nebraska, including future Birding Bowls.

"I have seen firsthand how improved habitats are making a difference for at-risk species," Cunningham said. "The innovation, dedication, and tireless efforts of conservationists to restore and protect these natural areas are truly inspiring. It is rewarding to support their work in a small way, helping ensure that these species can thrive for generations to come while giving Nebraskans meaningful opportunities to connect with and appreciate our wildlife heritage."

Cunningham was randomly drawn from a group that had to observe at least 150 species and submit at least 10 eBird checklists, including three from the Nebraska Birding Guide map.

"David's generosity demonstrates the passion and commitment that Birding Bowl participants have for Nebraska's wildlife and conservation," said Watchable Wildlife Biologist Meghan Thompson, organizer of the event.

The fourth annual Birding Bowl took place May 1-31 to celebrate Nebraska Bird Month. It drew 750 birders, 300 more than in 2025.

This free, statewide competition has birders of all ages and levels using eBird, a community science platform, to track observations while contributing data for bird conservation.
