Maine Warden Service Investigating Fatal ATV Crash In Vassalboro

VASSALBORO, Maine – Maine Game Wardens are investigating a fatal ATV crash in the town of Vassalboro.

On May 8th at approximately 8:00 p.m., Maine Game Wardens responded to a fatal ATV crash in Vassalboro. Cobey Schmidt, age 52 of Vassalboro, was operating his side by side style ATV in his yard when his left front tire struck a rock, causing him to partially eject from his ATV, which then rolled on top of him.

A vehicle passing by observed an ATV on its side with the lights pointing at the road and could see that it was on top of a man. They called 911, and Maine State Police and Emergency Medical Services arrived and lifted the ATV off the man. He was pronounced deceased upon their arrival. Cobey was the only occupant in the ATV. The initial investigation indicates that speed is suspected to be a factor in this crash.

Warden Service was assisted by Maine State Police and Vassalboro Fire and Rescue. This release will be updated if any new information becomes available.
