Visit Schramm Education Center for May Events

Make a visit to the Schramm Education Center south of Gretna, where educators have scheduled a variety of engaging events for the curious in May.

The center, located within Schramm Park State Recreation Area, is open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. daily. Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for seniors and ages 4-12, and free for 3 and under.

A Nebraska Vehicle Park Entry Permit is not required to park in the Schramm Education Center parking lot.

Learn about Amphibians of Nebraska

Discover the fascinating world of Nebraska amphibians with state herpetologist Dennis Ferraro on May 2 at the Schramm Education Center to kick off National Amphibian Week.

This free event offers two opportunities for froggy fun, but registration is required.

  • A session from 2-4:30 p.m. is on Amphibians of Nebraska. Learn about the many amphibians in a lecture-style presentation in the Schramm Education Center Classroom and view live examples of many frog, toad and salamander species. Then, with the supervision of a professional scientist, learn and practice catching and identifying frogs at a pond.
  • A Frog and Toad Call Identification Class will be from 7:30-9 p.m. Learn to identify amphibians by their calls through a classroom presentation followed by a walk down to the park (mile round trip) to hear frogs calling. Bring a headlamp or flashlight.

Little Saplings presents Spring Flowers on May 13

Adults looking to explore the outdoors with their young children are invited to Little Saplings, a monthly early childhood nature discovery program.

The 2026 series, which occurs on the first Wednesday of the month, continues May 13 at 9 and 10 a.m. The topic will be Spring Flowers. The program is designed for children ages 2-5 and their adult caregivers. The cost is $5 per child and $5 per adult.

Homeschool Hikes set for May 20

Homeschool families are invited to join an outdoor educator on a guided hike during the Homeschool Hikes program at 9 a.m. May 20. This month's theme is Snakes.

During the program, participants may ask questions, draw, observe, and make discoveries in nature. They will have the opportunity to observe local phenomena, plants, and animals while exploring concepts such as patterns, cause and effect, and structure and function.

Homeschool Hikes is a monthly nature exploration program hosted by the Schramm Education Center geared toward homeschool families and ages 5 and up.
