Women for Gun Rights State Directors Help Defeat Restrictive Firearm Bills Across Multiple States

As legislative sessions concluded across the country, multiple gun-control bills aimed at restricting the lawful sale, ownership, and carry of firearms failed to pass following sustained grassroots opposition that included testimony from Women for Gun Rights (WGR) state directors and delegates. From the Southwest to the Midwest and the Northeast, WGR leaders testified in committee hearings, submitted written opposition, and mobilized members to ensure lawmakers heard constitutionally grounded arguments focused on both liberty and public safety.

"Legislation fails when informed citizens show up," said Dianna Muller, Founder of Women for Gun Rights. "Our state directors are trained, prepared, and committed to defending the Second Amendment in every hearing room where it is challenged."

Legislative Measures That Failed to Advance

Arizona

HB 2619, proposing registration-style requirements and additional restrictions on certain semiautomatic firearms, did not pass during the session. WGR Regional Director & Advisory Board Member Cheryl Todd voiced opposition during legislative consideration.

Illinois

Additional proposals introduced this session seeking to expand civil liability and regulatory burdens on firearm manufacturers and dealers beyond existing law did not reach final enactment. WGR State Director Dr. Lori Blackwell engaged lawmakers during committee consideration.

Minnesota

Proposals including HF 3433 (commonly described as an "assault weapon" ban) and HF 3402 (magazine capacity limits) stalled in committee and did not advance following divided votes and organized opposition by WGR State Director JoAnne Max.

Missouri

Several firearm restriction proposals introduced during the 2026 session including SB 1158 that proposed establishing a red-flag firearm confiscation system, and HB 2727, targeting possession of high-capacity magazines did not advance to final passage. WGR State Director Susan Meyers monitored these proposals and engaged lawmakers multiple times to ensure constitutional concerns were represented.

New Jersey

Several firearm-related proposals failed to advance during the 2026 session, including ACR72 (a resolution urging expanded federal gun-control measures), S2097 (criminal penalties related to binary triggers), and A3536 (expanded purchase prohibitions tied to reporting requirements). These measures did not clear committee or receive final floor votes. WGR State Director Theresa Inacker engaged lawmakers and submitted testimony opposing these proposals.

New Mexico

SB 279 sought to prohibit the sale and future possession of certain gas-operated semiautomatic firearms and restrict large-capacity ammunition feeding devices. SB 17 proposed additional firearm-related restrictions impacting lawful possession and regulatory compliance requirements for gun owners. Both measures failed to reach final passage before adjournment. WGR delegates Mira O'sonnell and Gina Roberts submitted testimonies opposing these proposals and engaged lawmakers during committee consideration.

Ohio

WGR leadership Amanda Suffecool and Candy Petticord traveled to Columbus to the beautiful Ohio Statehouse to provide proponent testimony in support of Senate Joint Resolution 8, which would permanently protect the individual right of Ohioans to hunt, fish, and harvest wildlife by placing these protections into the Ohio Constitution through the legislative referral process.

Utah

HB 0080, proposing expanded firearm storage mandates and additional compliance requirements for gun owners, did not pass this session after public testimony and legislative review that included WGR Northwest Regional Director & Advisory Board Member Raelle Cunningham.

Virginia

HB 217, addressing restrictions on defined "assault firearms" including limitations on sale and transfer, failed to become law. Related proposals expanding carry prohibitions in designated locations also did not advance. WGR State Director Jill McDaniel provided testimony opposing these efforts.
